Information on EU shoe sizes

EU shoe sizes replace the former German, Italian or French shoe sizes. Unlike in Great Britain and the USA, EU shoe sizes are not calculated in inches, but in millimetres and centimetres, respectively. One EU shoe size corresponds to two-thirds of a centimetre (i.e., 0.667 cm). These two-thirds centimetres are a historically created size. In the middle of the 19th century, European shoemakers used sewing machines with the so-called Paris stitch—a seam spacing when sewing shoes of exactly this size—which still defines a single EU shoe size today. The basis for determining EU shoe sizes is usually the foot length in centimetres (also used according to the ISO standard). However, some manufacturers still prefer the interior length or the length of the shoe last as the basis for the sizes. This is one of the reasons why shoe sizes vary so much.

Calculation of EU shoe sizes according to ISO/TS 19407:2015

The EU Shoe Size Calculator calculates all shoe sizes according to ISO. The EU shoe size tables presented here are also taken from this ISO specification. The ISO (International Organization for Standardization) has defined the conversion of shoe size systems and thus issued this international pre-standard. Nevertheless, there are often deviations from the EU shoe sizes theoretically calculated here. Therefore, shoes often turn out smaller or larger depending on the manufacturer or simply due to deviating standardisation.

ISO formula for calculating the EU shoe size for adults

EU shoe size = (foot length in cm + 2 × 0.667) / 0.667

The formula for the EU adult size makes it clearer that each size corresponds to 0.667 cm. For toe clearance, as it is usually the case, two sizes are added (i.e., 2 × 0.667 cm).

ISO formula for calculating the EU shoe size for children

EU children's shoe size = foot length in cm × 1.08 / 0.667 − 0.4

Compared to the adult formula, a surcharge of 8 percent of the foot length is added for toe clearance, instead of the two EU sizes. Finally, for the ISO formula, 0.4 sizes are added again to obtain practical size tables.

Based on the ISO technical specification, the following shoe size table is the results for all EU shoe sizes. Unlike the US system, EU shoe sizes (just like UK sizes) make no distinction between EU women's shoe sizes and EU men's shoe sizes.

Shoe size chart for EU shoe sizes for children

As can be seen from the above ISO formula for children, a slightly different toe clearance of 8&nmbsp;percent is used for EU children's shoe sizes. In addition, in the UK and US systems, children's sizes are numbered differently from adult sizes. In this case, 13 children's sizes are followed by adult sizes starting with 0 or 1. Based on the ISO specification, the following shoe size chart is recommended for all EU children's shoe sizes.

In this ISO size table for EU shoes, some fields have remained open. This is because the official ISO formula has not determined a counterpart in the other respective size units at the corresponding position. However, the EU Shoe Size Converter also calculates the rounded sizes for the fields that are still open. The calculation and rounding are explained in detail in the calculator result behind the info buttons.

An example of the calculation of the EU shoe size

Ms Schuster wants to buy new shoes and is overwhelmed by the different size specifications. In the Shoe Size Converter, she enters her EU shoe size (i.e., EU size 39) to calculate the sizes of the other shoe size systems.

1. Calculation of the foot length based on the EU size

First, the foot length is calculated based on the specified shoe size (i.e., size 39). This is because the foot length serves as the basis for calculating the shoe sizes for the other size systems. For this purpose, the ISO formula for calculating the shoe size based on the foot length is converted accordingly.

ISO formula for calculating the EU size

EU shoe size = (foot length in cm + 2 × 0,667) / 0,667

Explanation

  • One size equals two-thirds of a centimetre (i.e., 0.667 cm)
  • Sizes start at 0
  • Two sizes of toe clearance (i.e., 2 × 0.667 cm) are added on.

Re-arranged formula for calculating the foot length

Foot length in cm = EU shoe size × 0.667 − 2 × 0.667

Calculation of Ms Schuster's foot length

39.0 × 0.667 − 2 × 0.667 = 24.68 cm

Here, you can get more information on the conversion of foot length (in cm) into the different shoe sizes.

Based on this foot length, the shoe sizes for the other size systems are calculated below using the respective ISO formula.

2. Calculate UK shoe size using the calculated foot length.

To determine Ms Schuster's UK size, the appropriate ISO conversion formula is first used based on her foot length. Then the calculation result is rounded to the nearest whole or half size.

ISO-Formel für UK-Größe

UK‑shoe size = (foot length + 2 × 0.847) / 0.847 − 25

Explanation

  • One size equals one-third of an inch (i.e., 0.847 cm)
  • The first 12 sizes are not numbered
  • The following 13 sizes are children's sizes
  • Adult sizes start with Size 1 following the children's sizes.
  • Thus, 25 sizes are subtracted
  • Two sizes of toe clearance (i.e., 2 × 0.847 cm) are added on

Here, you can find more comprehensive information on UK shoe sizes.

Calculation of the UK size

(24.68 cm + 2 × 0.847) / 0.847 − 25 = 6.137 UK

Rounding the result

Rounded to the nearest whole or half size, this gives Ms Schuster Size 6.0 UK.

Ms Schuster's EU Shoe Size 39 corresponds to UK Size 6.0 after conversion.

3. Calculate US shoe size using the calculated foot length

In addition, to determine Ms Schuster's US size, the appropriate ISO conversion formula for US sizes is used based on her foot length. Then the calculation result is also rounded to the nearest whole or half size.

ISO formula for US size

US‑women's size =(foot length + 2 × 0.847) / 0.847 − 23

Explanation

  • One size, as in the English system, is equal to one-third of an inch (i.e., 0.847 cm)
  • The first slightly less than 12 sizes are not numbered
  • The following 13 sizes are children's sizes
  • The sizes for women start after the children's sizes with Size 0
  • Therefore, 23 sizes are subtracted. That is, exactly 23 sizes are subtracted because, in practice, the US system is largely aligned with the UK system. However, with the exception that, for the same foot length, US women's sizes are two sizes larger than the corresponding UK shoe sizes.
  • Two sizes of toe room (i.e., 2 × 0.847 cm) are added on.

Below is more comprehensive information on US shoe sizes.

Calculation of the US size

(24.68 cm + 2 × 0.847) / 0.847 − 23 = 8.137 US

Rounding the result

Rounded to the nearest whole or half size, this gives Ms Schuster a Size 8.0 US Ladies.

Ms Schuster's EU Shoe Size 39 corresponds to US Size 8.0 after conversion.

4. Calculate Mondopoint shoe size for Russia, China, and Japan

Converting the foot length with the Mondopoint system is rather simple as it gives the foot length in millimetres.

ISO formula for Mondopoint size

Mondopoint‑size = foot length in cm × 10

Here, you will find more comprehensive information on Mondopoint shoe sizes.

Calculation of the Mondopoint size

24.68 cm × 10 = 246.79 Mondopoint

Rounding the result

Rounded to the nearest Mondopoint size, this gives Ms Schuster a size 245 Mondopoint.

Ms Schuster's EU Shoe Size 39 corresponds to Mondopoint Size 245 after conversion.
